Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my roof needs repair or replacement?

Watch for these signs:

  • Missing, cracked, or curling tiles/slates
  • Leaks, damp patches or sagging areas inside your home
  • Moss, algae, or excessive debris build-up
  • Visible light or drafts in the loft

If your roof is over 20 years old or heavily damaged, a full replacement might be more cost-effective.

Can I safely repair my roof myself?

Minor tasks (like gutter cleaning or replacing a few tiles) might be DIY‑friendly—but roofing is inherently dangerous. It’s safer and more reliable to hire trained professionals.

How often should I have my roof inspected?

We recommend a professional inspection at least once a year, ideally in spring or autumn, and after severe weather events.

What roofing materials do you work with?

We specialise in a range of options:

  • Slate (50‑100+ years lifespan)
  • Clay & concrete tiles (40‑100+ years)
  • GRP fibreglass, EPDM rubber & PVC single ply membranes and lead for flat roofs.

How much does a new roof cost?

This depends on the size of the roof and the current roof coverings. We may be able to reuse tiles or slates or they may need to be completely replaced depending on the age/condition. The only way to calculate the true cost is to get a survey and a quotation done.

How long will a complete re-roof take?

Depending on the size and complexity of the roof, re-roofing can take anywhere from one week to 4/5 weeks.

Do I need building regulations or planning permission?

Planning permission is not usually needed for roofing work unless the building is in a conservation area or a listed building. Building Regulations approval is required when altering 25% or more of your roof.

Do you offer guarantees and Insurance‑Backed Guarantees (IBG)?

Yes, we provide:

  • Material and workmanship guarantees, typically 10 years.
  • These are backed up by a Homepro IBG for added homeowner protection.

Can you take on roof work for listed or heritage properties?

Absolutely. We have experience working on historic homes in Wiltshire using traditional materials and methods in line with planning requirements.

What is flashing and why is it important?

Flashing is generally protective lead around chimneys, vents, and valleys to prevent water ingress. It must be correctly installed to prevent leaks.

How do you maintain flat roofs?

Flat roofs should be inspected twice a year, along with clearing debris and checking drainage. Minor ponding in wet weather is normal, but prolonged standing water on the roof should be addressed.

Is re-roofing safe during rain & winter months?

Yes – with precautions:

  • We monitor the weather patterns to make sure conditions are suitable before we start work.
  • We would only expose small sections of roof that will be covered in by the end of the day.
  • We install breathable underlay and secure covers immediately.

How do I choose a good roofing contractor?

Look for contractors who:

  • Are qualified & insured
  • Provide clear, written quotes
  • Offer solid warranties or guarantees
  • Hold accreditation like Fairtrades or TrustMark

Will living in the house during re-roofing cause inconvenience?

Not usually. Most work is completed safely while you’re home, though there will be some noise or vibration.

What ongoing maintenance can extend my roof’s life?

  • Keep gutters and drains clear
  • Trim overhanging branches
  • Repoint flashing/mortar around chimneys
  • Conduct annual inspections
